This course will cover the principles underlying animal development. You will learn developmental processes and the underlying mechanisms in vertebrate (mouse, chick, frog, fish) and invertebrate (fly, worm, sea urchin) models, with a particular emphasis on the molecular genetic basis and evolutionary mechanisms for developmental events. Genetic engineering techniques, new areas of developmental biology research as well as developmental diseases in humans will also be discussed. Specific topics include:
- Cell Specification and Regulation of Gene Expression
- Fertilization and Sex Determination
- Formation of Early Body Plan
- Organogenesis and Regeneration
- Tools and Techniques to Study Development
- Development in Wider Contexts
(e.g. Evo-Devo, Development and Disease, CRISPR in human embryos)
This course will be offered using a combination of online and face-to-face formats. All lectures will be face-to-face format; all paper discussions and case study discussions will be online.
